Irkutsk was founded by Russian Cossacks in 1661 as small settlement. At the end of the 17th c. Irkutsk became the most important transit point on trade routes from Russia to Mongolia and China. City tour might impress you with different sights illustrating the history of Russia. You will see oldest brick building of the city Church of Our Savior (the 17th c.). Lunch at city restaurant with traditional Siberian menu. Museum of Decembrists tour. In the 19th c. some noble people (among them prince Trubetskoy, prince Volkonsky) were exiled to Irkutsk region after armed revolt in St. Petersburg on 14.12.1825. Transfer to the Lake Baikal (65 km) with stop for excursion at the Taltsy open-air Museum of Wooden Architecture and Ethnography situated in the picturesque place on the bank of the Angara River. Authentic wooden buildings of the 17-19th cc. carried away from different parts of the Irkutsk Region were reassembled at one place presenting Russian, Evenk and Buryat way of living. The capital if Buryat Republic is situated at the junction of Selenga and Uda Rivers on a crossroad of trading routes from China and Mongolia to Russia and Europe. The settlement of Nizhneudinsk (former name of the city) was founded in 1666 by Russian Cossacks as a winter outpost.
